Physical Therapy Services at High Peaks We provide Physical Therapy Intervention/Treatment to increase strength, range of motion, coordination balance, and/or endurance. Physical Therapy intervention may also be recommended to help a child develop new motor skills, to assist with alleviation of pain, or to improve safety awareness during motor play. A variety of methods are used to assist the child with a developmental delay or disability including therapeutic exercise, positioning devices (corner seats, gait trainers, standers, and walkers), physical agents (heat, cold, water), and casting, taping, and splinting. Therapeutic exercise may include passive exercise where the therapist moves and stretches the child's muscles or active exercise when the child participates in climbing, running, jumping, pushing/pulling activities. The child also may participate in new ways to acquire and control positions and movements through a variety of play experiences. A therapist may bring ropes, tape, hopscotch games, hoola hoops, balls, foam wedges, foam stairs, skates, bicycles, push toys, blankets, play tunnels, or a small trampoline to your home to help your child to acheive his or her therapy goals. Your child may play in different positions to develop muscle control, body awareness, strength and postural control. PT sessions are generally fun and your child may see the time as "play" rather than therapy or work! Another apsect of an PT's job is to educate parents regarding their child's strengths and weaknesses and to provide activities that can be completed during non-therapy times. Parent education and involvement is CRUCIAL to the success of the child's programs and goals. The PT also works closely with other professionals who may be involved with your child to ensure carry-over and continuity of all goals intended for successful outcomes for your child. Your child's PT may recommend that your child receive special equipment such as a wheelchair, stander, walker, bath seat, or travel seat to help your child to reach his or her mobility and motor goals. When necessary, your PT will also help you to obtain funding for these items and train you in their proper use and care.
